Obituary for Joanne W. Ochs (Walsh)

Wells- Joanne W. Ochs, 87 years, of Riverbend Road died January 23, 2015 at Southern Maine Healthcare in Sanford, ME.

Joanne was born in Boston, MA on September 22, 1927, a daughter of Dr. James and Dorothy (Osterhout) Walsh, JR. She earned her bachelor’s degree in 1949 from Regis College in Weston, MA and her master’s degree from University of St. Joseph in West Hartford, CT in 1975. On October 16, 1954 she married Joseph Francis Ochs.

Joanne started her teaching career in Shrewsbury, MA at the Harlow School. She later moved to East Hartford, CT and taught at the Governor William Pitkin Middle School and later at the George J. Penney High School. She loved teaching and was voted most popular teacher several times over the years. She especially enjoyed reaching out to some of the more challenging students and encouraging them to get the most out of their educations. Joanne also enjoyed gardening and sewing.

In addition to her parents, Joanne was predeceased by her daughter, Catherine A. Ochs-Weiss on December 11, 2012.

Joanne is lovingly remembered by her husband of 60 years, Joseph F. Ochs; her son, Joseph James Ochs, of Burlington, CT; her sister, Maureen McEvoy, and her husband, Albert, of Wells, ME; her three grandchildren, Joey, Hailey and Ally; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Ocean View Cemetery in Wells, ME with Father Thomas Murphy. Times and dates will be announced.
