The youngest of three brothers, he was born on January 2, 1929, in Boston, Mass, son of John J. and Rose G. O’Donnell, joining older brother Bernard and middle brother Joseph. Growing up in Roxbury, Mass., Alfred graduated from High School of Commerce in Boston, and worked as a file clerk at Dun & Bradstreet in Boston from 1946 to 1951. From 1951 to 1953, Alfred served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during the Korean War. After Navy service, Alfred attended Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters degree in English. On June 1959, he married fellow BGSU Graduate student Janet Eleanor Fladlien, and in March 1960 his son William Sean was born.

From 1962 to 1972, Alfred worked as an Editor for Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS), an open source intelligence component of the CIA that monitored, translated and disseminated news and information from media sources outside the United States. During his decade with FBIS, Alfred was assigned two overseas posts, the first in Saigon, Vietnam, from 1962-64, the second in Vienna, Austria, from 1966-69, with residencies in suburban Washington DC in between. After vacation visits to southern Maine, Alfred and family moved to Kennebunk in 1972. From 1973-78, Alfred and Janet owned and operated The Finishing Touch Fabric Shop in Kennebunk. Alfred’s other professional pursuits included time as a teacher and photographer, and he was also active in Kennebunk community theater productions for The Porpus Players and the East Coast Theater Company. In 1988, he became Office Manager for the Kennebunk River Club for 22 years until his retirement in 2010.
