Heather Johnston, 59, a resident of Kennebunkport, died Friday, February 12, 2016 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough with her family at her side following a brief illness.

Heather was born September 26, 1956 in Boston, the daughter of Lois H. and James S. Johnston, MD, and attended local schools, Berwick Academy, and briefly attended Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy.

She greatly enjoyed working for New England Aquarium Services tending aquariums throughout Southern Maine for 13 years. In following years, Heather worked in hospitality, including the Grand Hotel in Ogunquit.
With a passionate love of animals, she volunteered to care for neighbor’s dogs, cats, goats, sheep, and llamas; besides finding homes for stray and abandoned dogs or a wild animal or two.

Described as strong, kind, and generous, she is survived by her close companion, Craig Pendergast and three loving children, Nathan E. Wescott and his companion Belle Stewart of Kennebunkport, Jessica Hutchins of Limerick and Devon Soloniewicz and her husband Christian of North Waterboro, a brother Douglas D. Johnston and wife Toby of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and a sister Sandra J. Brennan and her husband Robert of Freeport, ME. Grandchildren Rhiannon, Lindsey, Rachael and Jacob Hutchins, Elyse and Mia Jones-Frank, and Chloe Soloniewicz, two nephews Elliott Brennan and his fiancé Cecilia Fletcher of Los Angeles, CA, and Zachary Brennan and his companion Eleonora Mazzucchi of Geneva, Switzerland.

A Memorial Celebration of her life will be announced later in the year.
