Obituary for Robert L. Kane Sr.

Robert L. Kane Sr.
IN MEMORY OF
ROBERT L. KANE, SR.
1954 - 2016
Robert L. Kane, Sr., a resident of Ogunquit, Maine, died Saturday July 9th 2016 at home surrounded by his family at the age of 61. Married to Carol Ann (Marotta) Kane for 31 years, Bob was born in Lynn, MA educated at St. Dom Savio Prep, East Boston and received a degree in microbiology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Later he earned his MBA from the University of Manchester, England after he and Carol moved their family to the UK, where they happily made their home for eight years.
Bob’s inquisitive mind and intellect, coupled with his can-do attitude shaped a successful international career in medical technology and business development, mergers and acquisitions, and implantable drug delivery systems for diabetes and congestive heart failure. He even formed his own medical imaging and light source company used in the early breakthrough stages of laparoscopic surgery.
His work in London as a health care practice leader with Arthur D. Little eventually led him to create Oxford Management Consulting, allowing the expansion of his work with the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development and projects in Western Europe, Japan, Ukraine, Russia and Mongolia. During this time, Bob was elected to the Royal Society of Medicine, London, England based on his extensive work in health care.
An avid reader and a lifelong learner, Bob’s office shelves were lined with books—from economics to global marketing and strategy. He was a self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit that rarely rested. His mind was always engaged, interested and excited by new opportunities; whether its focus was building and owning a car wash (yes, he did that too!) or introducing cutting edge technology for laparoscopic gall bladder surgery.
Yet even in the midst of his endless business ventures, Bob’s devotion to his family was clear. Not only did he impart the importance of education, but he was quick to share his passion for adventure and travel with his children, particularly during their time spent in England. His family favorites, based upon stories told…the Royal Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle, hiking Germany’s Black Forest, swimming in the Indian Ocean off South Africa’s Coast, touring the island of Cyprus – and visiting his father’s birthplace in Ireland. After returning to the U.S. in 2005, he continued to travel back to the UK and Europe on business, yet was always happy to come home to Ogunquit, where long walks on Ogunquit Beach remained a prized pastime. He would often sing the praises of the, “pristine, three mile beach voted tops in New England!” where very few days were ever too cold for a swim.
Be it business or pleasure, it was always clear sailing and blue skies in Bob Kane’s eyes…he will be missed.
Bob was one of four children born to Leo Kane, Sr. (deceased) and Theresa (Hyde) Kane of Nahant, MA. Bob will be forever remembered by his beloved wife Carol, his treasured children Caroline Kane of Devon, England, Kristen Kane of New York City, and son Robert Kane, Jr. of Ogunquit, ME; and his sisters Susan and husband John Carli of South Carolina, Elizabeth Kane of Boston and brother Leo Kane and children—Rosie and Ollie all of Cork, Ireland; also his caring in-laws Nancy (Morelli) Marotta (deceased); Carmelo ‘Duke’ Marotta and Helen Price; Frank Marotta and wife Dianna, and children—Francis, Felicia, Anthony and Rocco, and Thomas Marotta all of Suffield, CT, along with a host of friends and business colleagues who have known him over the years.
All are invited to join in a Memorial Mass to be held at 11am on Saturday, August 20th 2016 at Sacred Heart Church, 446 Mountain Road (Route 168), Suffield, CT.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the ‘Living Well With Cancer Fund’ at York Hospital: York Hospital, Friendraising Office, 15 Hospital Drive, York, Maine 03909, in Mr. Kane’s honor.
Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME.
