Obituary for Michael Hedley "Autie" Austin

Michael Hedley "Autie" Austin
Cape Porpoise, ME. Michael Hedley Austin, 62, known to his friends and family by many nicknames, including Otis and The Sheriff, but mostly Autie, died Monday Morning, December 5, 2016 in the home he grew up in on the Mills Road, surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.

Autie was born June 25, 1954 in York, Maine the son of Courtney Chester and Pauline Gertrude McLean Austin. He attended Consolidated School and Kennebunk High School.

He had many occupations in the area, among them were working at his father’s hardware store, Austin’s Hardware, in Dock Square, the former Shawmut Inn on Turbot’s Creek, and Reid’s Boatyard, where he further developed his love of the ocean. He hauled for many years on his boats “Trigger” and “Roberta A.”. He also worked on many different boats scalloping, urchining, gillnetting, dragging, and lobstering out of Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport, and Portland. He sold his last boat recently, saying this work was for younger fella’s.

Autie is survived by his wife Bert Austin, his son Michael R. Austin and his companion Leah Mosher, all of Cape Porpoise, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, a niece and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8PM Monday, December 12, 2016 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk, ME.
