Obituary for Janet H. Cox

Dateline – Kennebunk

Janet Herbert Cox died peacefully at the Gosnell House Memorial Hospice in Scarborough on February 12, 2017 after a brief illness. She was born on October 1, 1925 in Philadelphia, the daughter of Charles and Catherine (Hoffman) Herbert. Janet graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. After graduation, she worked at the N.W. Ayer & Sons advertising agency in Philadelphia and was a supervisor in the Business Production Department.

Janet and her parents vacationed each summer at the Arlington Hotel in Kennebunkport. It was there that she met her husband, David S. Cox from Montreal, who also vacationed at the Arlington with his parents. They were married in 1956 and moved to Springfield, Massachusetts. David’s career in the chemical industry would move them to Westport, Connecticut; Martinsville, New Jersey; and finally to Cupertino, California before retiring to Kennebunk in 1987.

Janet enjoyed spending time with elderly shut-ins, which she did as a volunteer for “Friendly Visiting” in California. Janet had many life-long friends from grade school, The Arlington Hotel, Penn, N.W. Ayer as well as neighbors from the various towns in which she lived, with whom she continually kept in touch.

Janet was pre-deceased by her husband, David. She is survived by her son, Robert and his wife, Claudia, of Basking Ridge, NJ, her daughter Elizabeth of Kennebunk, and her two wonderful granddaughters, Madeline and Julia, of Basking Ridge.
