Obituary for Susan Stedman

Susan Stedman
Susan Jean Stedman, 58, of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport died Friday, June 16 at Southern Maine Medical Center after being hospitalized to begin treatment for cancer. She was born on February 27, 1959 in Springfield, MA to James and Eleanor (Serafino) Farley. She was a 1977 graduate of the High School of Commerce in Springfield and attended Springfield Technical Community College studying nursing.

Sue worked in customer service and sales for several companies in the Springfield area, including Smith-Holden, Inc., a dental and medical supply dealer, where she met future husband Richard Stedman. Sue and Dick were married in 1992 and moved to Rhode Island, where daughters Amy and Katie were born. In 1997, Sue's family was fortunate to be able to move to her beloved Goose Rocks Beach and permanently become residents of Maine. Her home at Goose Rocks became a place of countless family gatherings that were a source of great joy to her. She also became actively involved in her daughters' lives, serving as a Girl Scout leader, soccer coach, dance mom, and participant in nearly every school activity.

Shortly after settling in Maine, Sue joined Kennebunkport EMS and quickly earned her EMT license, which enabled her to fulfill a passion for medical care. She served KEMS for nearly 20 years as a volunteer EMT, Assistant Chief, and as Chief of Operations for six years. In addition to volunteering thousands of hours caring for the people of Kennebunkport, Sue was instrumental in the acquisition of many pieces of advanced life-saving equipment and the purchase of two state of the art ambulances. She also worked diligently to implement a program of round the clock paramedic coverage for Kennebunkport. At the time of her death, she was continuing her devotion to KEMS through serving on the Board of Directors and helping to shape the future of this vital organization.

Sue also found a second home at the Church on the Cape in Cape Porpoise, a special community for her which she called "perfect" after her very first visit. The church family embraced her wholeheartedly, and she quickly became involved in numerous activities and committees. She has served as Church Secretary and Religious Education Director for over twelve years; during which she has been involved in managing the daily operation of the church, teaching Sunday school, helping to plan weddings and other events, and leading mission trips to Guatemala and other places in need. Her family will be forever grateful for the outpouring of support received from the church family, most notably from Pastor Pat MacHugh and Pastor Emerita Ruth Merriam, both of whom became special friends of Sue.

She was also a member of the Kennebunkport Fire Department and the Atlantic Volunteer Engine Company in Cape Porpoise. Sue was a member of the department's honor guard, marching in many parades and standing by at memorials to honor fallen firefighters.

Sue will always be remembered as the friendly, welcoming person that every organization needs to be successful. She was the good listener to all, who could diffuse controversy and make people happy to be part of a group. And if anything needed to be organized or reorganized properly, she was the one to call! For her family, as well as all with whom she worked, she leaves a legacy of positive energy that will long endure.

She is survived by her parents, Jim and Ellie Farley of Springfield, MA, husband Dick Stedman and daughters Amy and Katie Stedman, all of Kennebunk, brother Jim Farley and his wife Kelly of Glastonbury, CT, nephews Daniel and Waylon Farley and niece Harper Farley, and her beloved little dog Boo.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, June 22nd, from 4:00-7:00pm at Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk. The memorial service will take place on Friday, June 23rd, at 11:00am at the Church on the Cape in Cape Porpoise. A private interment will follow.

Should friends choose, donations in her memory may be made to Kennebunkport EMS, PO Box 1761, Kennebunkport, ME 04046.
