KENNEBUNK Katherine Jennings “Kate” Moxham, 46, a resident of Kennebunk, died Friday, July 7, 2017 at Maine Medical Center in Portland from injuries received in an accident.

Kate was born May 5, 1971 in Kingston, PA, the daughter of Donald Bryden Jennings and Freda Ann Lockyer Jennings, and is a graduate of Merrimack College in North Andover, MA with a BA degree in History.

Kate was a seeker of knowledge, and made every effort to share her knowledge, educating and inspiring everyone around her. She loved reading (mostly non-fiction), had a huge passion for libraries and learning, and was a staunch advocate for both. She was vocal about what she stood for, and fought fiercely for what she believed in, but paired her strength with an openness and generosity of spirit. Recently, having been ‘awakened,’ as she put it, Kate had embarked on a new, important passion, activism, participating in the historic March for Women in Washington DC, as well as the March for Science in Boston.

Kate was a tireless energizer and advocate. Bringing people together, sparking connections and encouraging relationships within her family, her wide circle of friends and her community was a hugely important part of her life. Full of life and energy, Kate was the brightest light in the room wherever she went. Her laugh was infectious and her wit kept others in stitches. Kind, generous, and tirelessly supportive, Kate lived for helping others, and did so on a daily basis, never needing to be asked. When a friend or family member expressed a need, or sought her help or guidance, Kate was there. She was the rock for many to cling to, and her kind and generous heart was always open.


One of Kate’s passions was literature, and she shared her passion with everyone she could. Kate was a volunteer at the Kennebunk Free Library, and served on its board of Trustees, including a term as board chair. Kate worked as a librarian in the Kennebunk School System, at the Sea Road School Library and also the Mildred L. Day School Library. After she left her “official” library jobs she frequently substituted in the libraries across the district. She loved talking about books, and was a generous sharer of them among friends and family. Kate also created summer reading lists for all students from elementary grades through middle school, and created personal lists for friends and students she knew. She loved matching people with books, helping them ‘discover’ books that inspired, informed, challenged, and intrigued. Her enthusiasm for the written word and her generosity of spirit ensured that all she met had the chance to experience the simple joy and fun of reading a good book.

First and foremost was Kate’s love of her immediate family - husband Todd of 17 years, and sons Tyler (15) and Riley (13). She was a tireless advocate for Tyler and Riley in the school system, and in life. Her boys were her light and inspiration, and she loved to travel and show them new places and things to expand their minds, and to show them how to live in a community, taking care of others. At the time of her passing, she was planning a service trip with Tyler to Mississippi with a team from South Congregational Church. Kate’s love also extended to animals, especially cats. Kate loved cats. Her cat Misty Mou Mou was a treasured friend and companion, and her bunny Butterscotch was dearly loved as well.

Survivors include her husband Todd Moxham, two sons Tyler Moxham and Riley Moxham, all of Kennebunk, her parents, Donald Jennings of Toms River, NJ and Freda Jennings of Melbourne, FL, two brothers, Donald Jennings of Rockledge, FL and Doug Jennings of FL, her cat Misty Mou-Mou and rabbit Butterscotch.

A celebration of Kate’s life will be held 2 PM Thursday, July 13, 2107, at the South Church River Green on North St. (beside South Congregational Church) Kennebunkport, with Reverend Charles Whiston officiating.
