Obituary for Janet Lillian Schorer (Abbott)

Janet Lillian Schorer (Abbott)
Dateline – Kennebunk

Janet A. Schorer, 89, a resident of Huntington Common in Kennebunk and formerly of Chick’s Crossing Road in Wells, died Saturday, July 29, 2017 at her residence, after a brief illness.

Janet was born August 18, 1927 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Charles and Lillian Whitlock Abbott. After graduating from Newton High School, Janet attended Mary Brooks Junior College and the Massachusetts School of Physical Therapy. During her career in the medical field, she worked as a laboratory technician at Kenmore Hospital, and served as an assistant and medical secretary in surgical offices in Boston and Brookline.

In 1949, Janet married Martin Schorer. Their sixty-six years of marriage were blessed with deep devotion, many shared interests, and fun-filled celebrations with their numerous friends and family. They made their home in Natick, Massachusetts, and shared it lovingly with their parakeet Birdie.

Upon retirement, Janet and Martin moved to Wells Branch, Maine to care for Janet’s widowed uncle, Willis Gowen. Janet attended the Congregational Church of Wells with Martin and served as sexton of the Oak Grove Cemetery. Her love of outdoor recreation and the preservation of nature fostered her involvement in the Kennebunk Fish and Game Club, Laudholm Farm, the Wells Reserve and the Great Works Regional Land Trust. Her interest in the local community and its history led to membership in the Brick Store Museum, the Historic Society of Wells and Ogunquit, the Wells-Ogunquit Center at Moody and the Wells Branch Community League. Above all, throughout their life together, Janet shared with Martin a passion for antique cars, notably the MG. On the New England MG T Register for more than half a century, Janet and Martin thoroughly enjoyed socializing at “Gatherings of the Faithful” and traveling with the New England MG Car Club throughout New England, America and the world.

Janet’s last years were graced with the companionship of her faithful friend, Janice Mildram. In all she did, Janet exhibited a zest for life, elegant style, love of adventure and a genius for celebration. Her sense of humor was mischievous, imaginative and witty. Her greatest happiness was to provoke a smile.

Survivors include Janet’s sister, Ruth Carley of California, brothers-in-law Peter Schorer of Arizona and R. Thomas Schorer of California, and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Martin, and her sister, Eleanor Maude Whitham.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the Newton Cemetery, Newton Center, MA.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wells Branch Community League, PO Box 713, Wells, ME 04090.
