Obituary for Diane P. Mugford (Nearis)

Diane P. Mugford (Nearis)
Diane P. Mugford, 59, of Kennebunk, died peacefully at her home on January 11, 2018 surrounded by her loving family after many months of declining health.

Diane was born on December 11, 1958 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the daughter of Pauline Florence Proulx and Merrill Babson Nearis, and was the one of the first female boarding students to graduate from The Governor’s Academy in Byfield. After working with children as a live-in nanny, Diane pursued a bachelor’s degree in education at the University of New Hampshire before having and raising her only daughter, Molly.

Diagnosed with diabetes at age four, Diane never let her disease dictate the way she lived, nor the way she loved. She faced both the highs and the lows of life with fierce determination, bravery and an unwavering faith. Diane thoroughly enjoyed serving the Lord and giving to others, whether she was volunteering at her church, befriending the elderly, or working tirelessly in the kitchen while she made batches upon batches of her famous and highly coveted chocolate chip cookies. Diane loved belting out songs, from hymns to Carole King to Jimmy Buffet, and she was the queen of winning various board games, particularly Monopoly. Although her life was cut far too short, Diane lived each day giving more love to those around her than most people give in a lifetime.

Diane is predeceased by her father, Merrill Babson Nearis.

She is dearly missed by all survivors including her husband, John Mugford, and their daughter, Molly Anne Mugford of Kennebunk; her mother, Pauline Schofield and husband Donald Schofield of Henderson, NV; her brothers, Scott Nearis of Malden, MA, Jay Nearis and wife Jennifer of Gloucester, MA, Merrill Nearis Jr. and wife Carole of Beverly, MA, and half-brother Francis Nearis of East Boston, MA; her two sisters, Denise Nearis of Cambridge, MA and Alison Nearis Martin and husband Timothy of Westwood, MA. Diane also leaves behind many in-laws, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, all of whom she loved more than words can express.

A service will be held in early spring to celebrate this vibrant, strong, and dearly loved woman.
