Obituary for George F. McKenney

George F. McKenney, 89, died January 14, 2018 in California.
George was born September 7, 1928 in Sanford, the son of William and Mary(LaFlamme) McKenney, and is graduate of Kennebunk High School, class of 1946. While at K.H.S, he was an excellent athlete. Following his graduation, he did what most young men did and joined the Army, serving until 1948. Upon his discharge, he furthered his studies attending University of Maine, Orono, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, and was a standout athlete, being named to the Black Bear Sports Hall of Fame.
Following his fortunes out west to California, he began working with Shell Oil Co briefly, before becoming the V.P. of Rhodes Construction. With the opportunity to purchase the company, he began building gas stations in many communities in California. He also began a start- up investment company. Selling his Construction Company in the late 1970’s, he devoted all his efforts to building Neptune Investments, which is still operating today.
With a life-long passion of golf, he was a member of several golf courses, including Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport and Webhannet Golf Club in Kennebunk, Spyglass Hill in Monterey, CA, Pinnacle Peak Golf Course in Scottsdale AZ and San Jose Country Club in California.
His first wife Kathryn (Kitty) McKenney, died in 1985, and his second his wife, Harriet J. McKenney, died in 2011.
Survivors include his daughter Marisa McKenney Richmond and her husband Gregory, of El Dorado Hills, CA, grandchildren Aldyn Richmond, Tyler Richmond and his wife Chelsey, and a step daughter Mary Ann Rutherford and her husband Mark, of Farmington, PA, and grandaughter Clohe Moore.
Maine was always his favorite place to be, so a graveside service is planned for 11 AM Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport, ME.
