Obituary for Margaret Thayer "Margie" Hollingsworth (Thayer)

Margaret Thayer "Margie" Hollingsworth (Thayer)
Margaret Thayer Hollingsworth, 91 1/2, of Kennebunkport, passed in her sleep at home with her family March 9th.

Margaret or Margie, as she was known to many, was born in Boston, MA Sept. 2nd 1926; the daughter of Edward Carrington Thayer and Margaret Bullock Thayer.

She is survived by her loving children Nathaniel Thayer, Chandler Thayer Tamulonis, and Katherine Thayer McCammond and her beloved step children Tracy Hollingsworth, Helen Hollingsworth, Valentine Hollingsworth, Laura Hollingsworth, and Arthur Hollingsworth. She leaves behind a legacy of 15 grandchildren.

Married in 1948 to John Eliot Thayer, Margie lived in New York City for 10 years before moving to Toronto, Canada. The family then moved to Tokyo, Japan for the next 4 years and then to Weston, MA in 1964. In 1971, she re-married to Valentine Hollingsworth and moved to Kennebunkport with her youngest daughter. They built a house on Fairfield Hill in 1979. She was predeceased by her husband in 1991, and continued living in their home surrounded by happy memories, and the comings and goings of her family, friends, and neighbors for the next 27 years.

Margaret was a talented artist and seamstress; style and elegance were important elements in her life, she made most of her clothes from Vogue patterns. Her pastel landscapes are featured in her annual calendars, and in 2012 she published and illustrated a book called The Lark At Heaven’s Gate Sings - an older woman’s handbook for living alone. All her homes had a piano, and she sang in choirs and the Yankee Belles.

Margaret was involved in Kennebunkport town government on the Planning Committee, researching deeds, the Board of Selectman and co-chaired the 350th Anniversary Committee. Since 2006, she worked at the polls for town elections. As she grew older she was able to stay in her own home with a large network of friends, family, neighbors, and helpers. For the last 2 years, she was lovingly cared for by professional in-home caregivers and her children.

Services will be held at the Church On The Cape, 3 Langsford Rd, Kennebunkport at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 17th. In lieu of flowers, you may give a donation in her honor to the YMCA of Southern Maine, a place she loved to go and swam laps into her 89th year at http://www.ymcaofsouthernmaine.org/give or 3 Pomerleau Street, Biddeford, ME 04005.
