Obituary for Howard L. "Hank" Boutilier

Howard L. "Hank" Boutilier
Dateline – Peabody, MA

Howard L. “Hank” Boutilier, 92, of Peabody, died Saturday, March 31, 2018, at High Pointe House in Haverhill. He was born in Abbott Village, ME, the second youngest of ten children of Wellesley H. and Hattie (Chambers) Boutilier.

Hank developed a strong work ethic at an early age. He began his first job at the age of 9, cutting and stacking firewood. By age 15, he had joined his father in the woods as a lumberjack. Because he started financially helping his family so early in life, he had to leave school in his elementary years.

Hank locked eyes with the love of his life, Florence Ridlon, when he was only sixteen. When World War II broke out, Hank was drafted at eighteen years old in the Army, fully intending to marry Florence before going off to war. Florence thought otherwise, waiting for his return from the Army. Hank saw action in Europe, fighting in the Battle of Brest. He was a member of the elite U.S. Army Rangers, earning several decorations, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Upon his discharge from active duty, the two lovebirds were married. Over the years, Hank and Florence enjoyed camping at the Salty Acres Campground in Maine.

He retired from Northeast Cutting Die where he was employed as a Die Bender for 39 years.

Hank was a tireless volunteer at the Peabody Senior Center, where he could always be found helping out in the kitchen. His dedication never went unnoticed.

He was a loving husband to his late wife Florence Ridlon of 56 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Cassandra Arkalis and husband Anthony of Carnegie, PA; his son, Daniel G. Boutilier and wife Claire of Lynn, MA; his grandson, Peter Arkalis and wife Dana; two great grandchildren, Zoey and Nico Arkalis.

There are no calling hours. A Memorial Service, with military honors, will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. Burial will follow in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport. Should friends choose, memorial donations in his name are encouraged to: Peabody Council on Aging, 79 Central Street, Peabody, MA 01960.
