Obituary for Fernald R. "Whitey" White Jr.

Fernald Russell White, 81, known as Whitey to all who knew him, a resident of Sea Road and a lifelong resident of Kennebunk died Monday, April 16, 2018 at Huntington Common in Kennebunk after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Whitey was born December 9, 1936, a son of the late Fernald Sr. and Evelyn Hatch White Walters, is a graduate of Maine Central Institute (MCI) and attended both Boston University and Bryant College.

A veteran of the United States Army, he was stationed in Alaska for 5 years.

Returning to Kennebunk following his discharge, he worked for Keuffel & Esser Company in Kennebunk until he retired, then bought his boat the El Condor and Lobstered for 10 years.

Whitey spent winters with his wife, Norma in Destin, Florida where he played golf, which was his passion. He belonged to the Webhannet Golf Club for over 50 years and was proud of the Lobsterman’s Open tournament that he organized, and Burnt Pine Golf Club at Sandestin Golf Resort, Destin Florida.

Whitey also enjoyed woodworking and making furniture in his barn, clamming in the local rivers, and spending time with his family and friends.

He is predeceased by his wife of 32 years, Norma White, who died this past December in 2017.

Survivors include his brother William White of Topeka, KS, his three children, William A. White and his wife Brenda of Arundel, Sheila White Hannon and her husband Thomas of Duxbury, MA, and Steven L. White of Sanford, a daughter-in-law Shawn M. White of North Berwick, four step children, Jaime Calvo, Nini Emmons, Toby Calvo and Amy Graves, six grandchildren Amanda, Julia, Tucker, Jacob, Teddy and Alex Cantwell and her husband Steve of Wells and a great granddaughter Harper Lee Cantwell.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME followed by a memorial service at 11 AM with the Reverend Laura Lee Knittweis officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk, ME.
