Obituary for Jean Seybold (Tully)

Jean Seybold (Tully)
Jean Tully Seybold, 89, a resident of Arundel and formerly of Verona, NY, passed from this earth on April 24, 2018 at The Landing at Saco Bay following a long illness. She was surrounded by love
and prayers in her final moments. A cardinal sat outside her window and called to her.

Jean was born on November 26, 1928, in Rome, NY, daughter of James and Jane Goodall Tully. She graduated from Verona High School with recognition for her many academic abilities. She worked in the business office of the Rome Developmental Center for several years.

After she turned 21, she married her high school sweetheart, John Seybold, in the Verona Presbyterian Church on June 3, 1950, with Reverand Samuel Southern officiating. She and “Johnnie” built a house on Main Street in Verona, between the Cmaylo and Agan families. Together, they made a loving home for raising their two children, Beth and Bill, among neighbors who helped each other daily.

Jean was active in and supportive of her children’s activities, serving as Brownie Leader, Cub Scouts Den Mother, teaching Sunday School, and attending vocal concerts, plays, Pop Warner football and baseball games. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, especially when Beth was in high school and sang with her. She sang soprano with her daughter’s alto harmonies.

She loved to travel, first with the whole family and after his retirement, with John. They frequently would “take off” without a plan and figure things out as they went along. They took time to meet many people along the way. Jean was the person people turned to for a “listening ear”. She shared her kindness, patience and love with many across the country and even in the international sphere!

Jean especially flourished in her role as “Oma”, German for grandmother, to her five grandchildren. Her homemade bread, chocolate chip cookies and Scottish shortbread were famous to her family and their friends. Before moving to their second home in Maine in 2002, she and “Opa” made frequent trips here to visit and attend grandchildren’s events.

During the past year, Jean was cared for by compassionate care givers, at her home and later, at the Atria in Kennebunk and The Landing at Saco Bay, formerly The Monarch Center of Saco. Jean found her third home in Saco, where the staff understood her disease process, lovingly cared for her, appreciated her humor and returned the kindness and patience she had shown others throughout her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Cantor Beth Strassler, and her husband, Dr. David Strassler of Arundel; son, William J. Seybold and his wife, Audrey, of Rochester, NY; five grandchildren, Joseph, Andrew & Sarah Strassler and John W. & George Wyatt Seybold; nieces, Debbie Seiselmeyer & family of New Hartford; and Karen Gozy & family of New Hartford; and nephew, Jeff Koniszewski & family, of Center Harbor, NH; sisters-in-law Helen May Koniszewski and Eunice Moot and her husband, Clarence.

Visitation and services will be on Thursday, April 26, at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street in Kennebunk. A visiting hour will be observed from 1 to 2 pm. The funeral service will be at 2 pm, officiated by Rev. Burt Howe. Burial will follow at Arundel Cemetery. Family and friends are invited back to the Strassler home afterward for a nosh.

May her memory be a blessing for all who loved her.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family may choose to make a donation to The Alzheimer’s Association.
