Robert S. Pickett, 86
DEWITT, N.Y. - Robert S. Pickett, Ph.D, 86, passed away on June 18, 2018, surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his wife Jane; their three children Elizabeth (John) O'Sullivan of Skaneateles, Tad (Tracey Strickland) of Syracuse, Sarah (Christopher Evans) of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren Meghan O'Sullivan Hinna (Robert), John O'Sullivan III (Erin Flaherty), Ceara O'Sullivan; and their two great grandchildren, Robbie and Alice Rose Hinna.
Bob was a scholar and painter, a man who was dedicated to his profession, his artistic pursuits and his family. He graduated from Kennebunk, Maine High School, the University of Southern Maine, Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Maxwell School PhD Program at Syracuse University. His scholarly work included his book The House of Refuge, Origins of Juvenile Reform in New York State , contributions to chapters in Hendricks Chapel by Richard Phillips and The Peacetime Draft, During The Cold War by Mel Rubenstein, plus numerous articles and presentations in the area of Child and Family Studies.
He was a faculty member at Syracuse University where during his tenure he served as department chair in the College for Human Development, the Director of the Overseas program in Amsterdam, and researcher for the Community Action Training Center. He also served as the Interim Dean of Hendricks Chapel where he was able to liaise with members of the many different faiths that make up the University community. Early in his career he was a faculty member at Clarkson College, Potsdam, NY and as a young man served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Unitarian Universalist Society, Rotary International and the American Legion.
In retirement Bob traveled internationally with his wife, often visiting with former students. He had always been interested in the arts and a painter since boyhood. Theatre also captured him as a young person and he found time to perform in several of the local community theatre groups, including appearing onstage with his daughter in several productions with The Pompeian Players. As a dad he passed on his passion for the arts, encouraging creative expression and to "always be mindful of the needs of others".
Robert will be laid to rest in Hope cemetery in Kennebunk, Maine.
Friends may call from 10-11AM on Monday, August 20, 2018 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME with a Memorial Service to follow at 11AM. Interment will be at Hope Cemetery.
