Obituary for John M. Cummings

John M. Cummings
Kennebunk
John M Cummings, 88, died at his camp on Kennebunk Pond with his wife Nancy at his side, on September 17, their 63rd wedding anniversary. He was born March 10, 1930 in Newton Massachusetts, a son of Henry and Dorothy Cummings, and graduated from Newton High School in 1947. John attended Hobart College, graduated from the Cornell University School of Hotel administration in 1951, and later did graduate work at Boston University. He was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1955 he married the love of his life, Nancy Coleman of Kennebunk.
John was a "people person" who was devoted to his family and his community. He was generous with his time and expertise, assisting many local organizations and individuals with their financial affairs. He loved nature and all its realms, and enjoyed gathering with family and friends at Kennebunk Pond, as well as annual reunions at his parents' family homestead in the Berkshires.
He passed his CPA exam and worked for several firms in Boston prior to hanging his shingle on Kennebunk's Main Street in 1960. He found great satisfaction seeing this one-man practice grow over the years, and enjoyed working with his many compatriots at Cummings Lamont & McNamee. Mr. Cummings was president of the Maine Society of Certified Public Accountants and represented Maine on Council of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and was active in other professional associations and councils.
John served as treasurer of many Kennebunk organizations. He was also a member of the Kennebunk Budget Board, a trustee of the Kennebunk Kennebunkport and Wells Water District, a longtime board member at Hope Cemetery, and an active member of the Kennebunk Rotary Club since 1961.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Pete Cummings.
John is survived by his wife Nancy, his son Jim Cummings of Kennebunk, his daughter Judy Hoag and her husband Dale of Middlefield Massachusetts, his brother Lincoln Cummings and his wife Marty of Arlington, Virginia, four grandchildren, Anasha Cummings of Troy, New York, Ashley Poirier and her husband Tyler of Fairfax, Vermont, Chase Carrington of Middlefield, Massachusetts, and Rosalinda Cummings of Seattle, Washington.
