Obituary for Linnea Westin Young (Westin)

Linnea (Westin) Young, a native of Maine and longtime resident of Reading, MA, passed away quietly at the age of 97 on (December 18th) at her home in Kennebunk, ME surrounded by her family members. She was the second daughter born at home to the late Erik Albert and Lillian May (Young) Westin on December 2, 1915 in Cape Jellison, Stockton Springs, Maine. She was educated in Maine and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Maine in 1940, with a Bachelor’s Degree in History receiving a full scholarship in her senior year, a value of $150 at that time. She was the wife of the late Stanley (Stan) P. Young whom she met on the Orono Campus of the University at a fraternity dance. They were married on June 22, 1940 and moved to Massachusetts, settling to raise their family in Reading where they lived in the house her father Erik Albert had built for 35 years. She and Stan retired to Kennebunk, ME in 1985.

Linnea loved to travel and visit historical landmarks around the world. Her travels include several trips to Europe and the United Kingdom, Peru, several cross country trips to the National Parks in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, and visiting friends and relatives in Florida. When she wasn’t traveling, she was busy running the household for her husband, three sons and daughter. She loved to cook, and her famous apple pies and molasses cookies will be sorely missed by her entire family. Even into her 90’s she was always focusing on her family and continued to bake molasses cookies and other goodies for her children, grandchildren and their families.
Linnea loved the outdoors especially the beach in Kennebunkport, where she could be seen walking her little Pug, Odie in the sand while the waves calmly broke off in the distance. During the early years of Stan’s retirement she would quietly sit on the bank of a stream reading while Stan was busy trying to hook his next big fish. She was an avid sports fan supporting the Red Sox and Patriots, and especially enjoyed watching her sons play football for Reading High School. She spent many hours volunteering at Church and at the Brick Store Museum where she was a docent.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul W. and Beverly Young of West Newbury, MA, daughter Greta W. Driscoll and the late Richard P. Driscoll of Haverhill, MA, son and daughter-in-law, Erik S. and Sharon Young of Marlboro, CT, and son, Kevin R. Young of Kennebunk, ME. She leaves eight grandchildren, Richard Driscoll II, Glenn Driscoll, Erik H. Young, Kristin L. Michalski, Leif S. Young, Erik W. Young, Meredith A. Young, Jennifer-Lyn Young and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister Greta (Young) Poulsen.
