Obituary for Violet L. Eberle (Lanphear)

KENNEBUNK, ME.

Violet L. Eberle, 96, a resident of Kennebunk, formerly of Upper Saddle River, NJ, died Friday, October 14, 2016 at her residence following a period of failing health.

Violet was born May 5, 1920 in New York, NY, the daughter of Vernon and Jane Campbell Lanphear, and is a graduate of Julia Richman High School in New York City, and attended New York University, majoring in journalism.

She began her career in journalism with the advertising firms of Paris & Peart and Pettingill & Fenton, both in New York City, then became assistant to the Editor of Women’s Day Magazine.

In 1949, she married Max Eberle, a former Swiss Ski champion, and together made their home in Upper Saddle River, NJ. In 1960, they opened the Swiss Ski Shop in River Edge, NJ, successfully operating it until their retirement in 1984, when they moved to Kennebunk.

Violet was a member of the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport, was an active volunteer for Laudholm Farm at Wells Reserve, the Kennebunkport Historical Society, and the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk.

She is predeceased by her husband Max A. Eberle.

Survivors include her sons Stephen Eberle of Ogunquit, Robert Eberle and his wife Janice of Denver, CO, and three grandchildren, Kristofer, Alexander, and Julia.

Visiting hours will be held 6-8PM Tuesday, October 18, 2016 from Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at South Congregational Church, 2 North St. Kennebunkport, with Reverend Charles Whiston officiating. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.
