Obituary for Charles Edwin Gould Jr.

Charles Edwin Gould Jr.
Kennebunkport

Charles Edwin Gould, Jr. died unexpectedly on June 28th following surgery for a fractured femur.

He was born on May 3rd, 1944, the son of the late Elizabeth Prince Gould and Charles E. Gould, Sr. Charles is survived by his sister, Susan Kennison Gould Hennessey and Richard T. Hennessey of Kennebunk, and Jane E. Duncan of Kennebunkport.

Born in Kennebunkport, Charles graduated from Hebron Academy in 1963, Bowdoin College in 1967 (the sixth generation of Goulds to do so), and the University of Connecticut in 1968, with a Master’s Degree in English literature. UCONN was where he met Carolyn S. Skidmore, whom he married in 1969. Carolyn predeceased Charles in 1986.

For two years, Charles taught at Hebron Academy and for over thirty-five years at Kent School in Kent, Connecticut. He wrote columns for Book Source Monthly (the professional journal for the antiquarian and rare book trade), poetry and light verse for Light Quarterly, and was a recognized authority on P.G. Wodehouse. He was a member of the P.G. Wodehouse Society in both the United States and the United Kingdom and as a book dealer had clients worldwide. He authored What’s In Wodehouse?, a compendium of facts, ephemera, quizzes and teases about Wodehouse and his books.

When Charles retired he became a permanent resident in Kennebunkport, in his home of thirty-six years, to enjoy his many and eclectic interests: restoring reed organs and antique furniture, working on his model railroad, indulging in his love of opera, literature and poetry. He was an interesting and gifted man and he will be sorely missed.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.
