Obituary for Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Green (Howard)

Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Green (Howard)
Dateline – Kennebunk

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Howard) Green of Kennebunk, Maine passed away on January 21st. She was the daughter of the late Rodney D. and Susan A. (Burgess) Howard of Pocasset, Mass. Born in Hyannis on March 23, 1932, she lived on Cape Cod where her father was a golf professional at the Pocasset Country Club and her grandfather was the Lighthouse Keeper at Wings Neck Lighthouse.

The family moved to Middleboro, Mass. where Betty attended High School. She played field hockey, was a cheerleader and graduated at the top of her class of 1950. She attended Bridgewater State Teachers College and worked for the AT&T telephone company in the days when there were switchboard operators. She was also a senior leader for the Girl Scouts in Plymouth County, MA.

She married, had three children, and her husband’s career brought the family from Middleboro to Florida, Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, and back to Massachusetts. In all the places Betty lived, she followed her passion for community theatre where she would either act or direct, whatever it took to make it happen: “Let’s put on a show” was a favorite phrase.

On May 20th, 1983, Betty married Elliot R. Green of Kennebunk, Maine. In Maine her bookkeeping services were employed by Kennebunk Water District, Brick Store Museum, Laudholm Farms, Warren Charles, Inc. and she also served as a treasurer for the U.U. Church. Elliot and Betty traveled on 24 Elderhostel trips in the U.S. and abroad.

Betty is survived by her daughters; Sarah and husband Michael Ciampa of S. Orleans, MA; Lucy and husband David Jalbert of Eastham, MA; brother Gilbert and wife Suzanne Howard of Middleboro, MA; granddaughter Liza Gammons Cook, of Oxford, CT and grandson Todd Gammons of Middleboro, MA; along with five great grandchildren; she also leaves step-children; Robert Douglas Green of Belhaven, NC, John D. Green and wife Susan of Lyman, Maine, Julia Lisa Buchanan of Arvada, Colorado; step-granddaughters, Kori A. Green of Boston, MA, Jessica M. Green, Jessica Jones and Charlotte Smith all of Kennebunk, ME - and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Elliot R. Green; her son, Carl R. Gammons; and her brother, Terry Howard.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the Huntington Commons Reminiscence staff for their tremendous care and love shown to Betty during the last years of her life.

No services are planned at this time. In the Spring, her ashes will join Elliot’s in the Hope Cemetery Kennebunk, Maine and some will return to Wings Neck Lighthouse on Cape Cod.
