Obituary for Neil Hayden Crandall

Neil Hayden Crandall, 82 years, died February 2, 2018 following a long period of declining health.

Neil was born March 23, 1935 in Randolph, VT, a son of Maurice and Mildred (Heath) Crandall. He graduated from Springfield, VT High School Class of 1953 and earned his BS in education with a major in science from the University of Vermont in 1960. Neil also graduated from the Academy of Professional Art Conservation in Lafayette, CA. Neil proudly served his country as a Sergeant in U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956. He worked for U.S. Catheter in Sales and as a science teacher at Otter Valley Union High School, Argyle Central, NY and he established Crandall Art and Frame in Glen Falls, NY. Neil’s primary occupation though was as a Fine Arts Conservator in private practice from 1976 to 2014.

In 1975 Neil moved with his family to Tennessee. Together with his first wife, Catherine Comfort Crandall, they raised three children, Gregory Crandall of Johnson City, TN, Catherine (Cari) Sledge of Raleigh, NC and Tamer (Tammy) Smith of Wilmington, NC. Neil returned to Vermont in 2005 to reunite with his longtime friend, Janet Seavey. They were married on September 29, 2007 and relocated to Maine in 2008 to be near family and the ocean.

Neil enjoyed nature, the ocean and reading. He loved his family and friends. His passion was artwork and he enjoyed painting.

Neil was predeceased by his parents, his sister and a grandson.

He is remembered by his wife, Janet Seavey Crandall; his three children; his brother, Gordon Crandall of NH; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Friends may visit on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 5-7 pm at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11 am at The Church on the Cape, 3 Langsford Road, Kennebunkport with Rev. Dr. Pat MacHugh.
