Obituary for Philip Clifford Sherman Sr.

Dateline – Saco

Philip Clifford Sherman, Sr., 95, of Saco, died Thursday morning, May 3, 2018 at his residence. He was born in Portland on November 14, 1922, the son of John Thomas Sherman and Eva Mae (Moore) Sherman. He grew up in Portland until the age of 19, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving in the Seabees during World War II in the South Pacific. Following his discharge from active duty, he returned home and, on July 4, 1948, he married his sweetheart Marion Arlena Webster. Philip began work as an Insurance Salesman. Then he changed careers and began to work for Howes Flooring in Wells, followed by Foyes Carpet and Flooring in Westbrook. In 1962, he started his own company, Sherman and Son Flooring Company, which he ran until his retirement in 1986.

Philip was never one to sit idle. In his retirement, he worked as a carpenter. In addition to building his home in Saco, he also made several beautiful furniture pieces for his family, and also handcrafted a strip kayak.

Philip was a member of Saco Lodge #9, A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years.

He is predeceased by a son, Paul Sherman, and his sister, Barbara Sherman.

Philip is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Marion Arlena Sherman of Saco; two sons, Philip C. Sherman, Jr., of Saco, John Webster Sherman and wife Katina of Saco; six grandchildren, Jessica Sherman, Christopher Sherman and wife Marcia, Stephanie Letourneau and husband Canaan, Joshua Sherman, Nicholas Sherman, and Chris Sherman; two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Mason and many nieces and nephews.

A Masonic Service, followed by a Graveside Service with military honors will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Philip’s name are encouraged to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
