Obituary for Joseph W. "Joe" Fairfield

Kennebunk - Joseph W. Fairfield, 62, a resident of Kennebunk and well-loved supporter of youth athletics, died Sunday morning, May 13, 2018 at his residence following a brief battle with heart disease.

Joe, as most folks knew him, was born September 28, 1955 in Biddeford, the son of Philip Gould and Louise Statira Wright Fairfield, and attended Kennebunkport Schools, Kennebunk High School, class of 1973, and attended S.M.V.T.I. in South Portland.

A lifelong hard worker, during school years Joe delivered the Portland Press Herald to his neighbors in Kennebunkport, and also for Spofford News Service, for many years.

Joe began his career working with SAD 71in Kennebunk, where he was Transportation Supervisor. He then moved to Traip Academy in Kittery, working as maintenance supervisor, and for the last 23 years has worked as maintenance supervisor for the Biddeford School Department. Not only did Joe care for the buildings, but he cared for the students as well, always having a kind word following a game, or asking how their day was going as they passed in the halls. Joe was the biggest cheerleader at away games, driving the bus for the team or fans, sitting in the front row of the bleachers, and leading a rowdy, loud cheer to support his school’s teams. He also announced many of the home games at the schools where he worked. Just recently, the Biddeford School Community renamed its annual Athletic Volunteer Award the “Joe Fairfield Athletic Volunteer Award” in his honor.

He was a partner in Fairfield Graphics for 10 years, a job that he loved, since it enabled him to interact with many different people as he created custom designs over the years.

Active in his community, he was a lifelong member of the Church on the Cape in Cape Porpoise, where he also served as its custodian, was a member of DeMolay in Kennebunkport, and Arundel Lodge # 76 AF & AM, Kora Shrine in Lewiston, Kora Moped parade unit, member and past president of Maine Patriot Riders, and the Boy Scouts of America.

Joe sponsored his own softball team for over 40 years; they called themselves Team Fairfield and Joe’s Diner.

One of Joe’s most defining qualities was his eagerness to help everyone around him, regardless the size or scope of the problem at hand. When thanked, Joe would simply say, “What, you thought I wasn’t going to help you?”

While Joe filled his time serving others, that all changed when he became a grandfather. His priority shifted to organizing his time, as he loved watching his grandchildren and supporting them in all their activities.

He is predeceased by his parents, and a sister Marjorie Gould.

Survivors include his wife Joette Fairfield of Kennebunk; two sons Brian Fairfield and his wife Gaby Grekin of Cape Porpoise, and Jeff Fairfield and his wife Samantha; daughter Holly Rousseau and her husband Tom, all of Wells; two stepchildren Ashley Ouellette of Wisconsin and Shannon Nichol of Epping NH; 9 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren; brothers Harold R. and his wife Fran of Yarmouth, Edward H. and his wife Martha of Hopkinton, NH, James P. and his wife Penny of Kennebunk, Kenneth D. and his wife Marge Hudson-Fairfield of Westbrook, and twin brother John W. and his partner Edski of Arundel, and a sister Betty Lou Townsend and her husband Glenn of Boothbay Harbor, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
