Berwick, ME

Donald L. Burgess, 79 years, passed away peacefully at Maine Medical Center on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 after a courageous battle with Mesothelioma.

Donald was born October 16, 1938 in his home in Berwick to Ralph and Clara (Breton) Burgess. He grew up in Berwick and attended Berwick High School, graduating in 1956.

He went to work at the former Dolby & Lilly Sheet Metal in Berwick as an apprentice. In January 1961 he entered the US Army and in June of 1962, he married Judy (Gardner) after meeting while waterskiing at Mousam Lake. Don was sent to Sweinfurt, Germany where Judy joined him. After returning to Berwick, he went back to work for Dolby & Lilly and he and Judy resided in Berwick. In the 1970’s he went to work for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he retired in 1998.

Don loved the outdoors and hunting, especially at a camp in Northern Maine on Tomah Stream. He loved being there several times a year hunting, fishing and four-wheeling with family and friends. Canoe trips and trips to Alaska and Newfoundland were a special joy to him. He also loved Boy Scouts and often boasted about the 5 Eagle Scouts in his family. H was a talented craftsman and could fix or build just about anything. He loved his family above all and took special joy in his children and grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents and siblings, Roger, Raymond, Robert, Rachael, Roland and Richard.
He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Judy, 3 children, Dr. Donald R. Burgess and his wife Mary Lou of Kennebunkport, a daughter Wendy Witham and her husband David of Somersworth, NH and Michael Burgess and his wife Jennifer of North Berwick; 5 grandchildren, Jacob, Sydney, Nick and Tim Burgess and Kaleb Witham, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 11AM – 1PM on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, where a memorial service will follow at 1PM. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick.
