Obituary for Agnes Georgia Steele (Smith)


Agnes Georgia Smith Steele passed away peacefully on July 25, 2018 at her home in Kennebunkport. She was born in Bozeman, Montana on November 1, 1920 to Ralph L. Smith and Helen (Emery) Smith.

Agnes grew up in Kennebunkport and Portland. She graduated from Deering High School in 1938 and then went to Farmington Normal School where she majored in Home Economics education and graduated with a teaching degree in 1942. Agnes then went to Pleasant Hill Academy, in Tennessee and taught Home Economics. This experience gave her a broader education and the constant desire to help others.

After the war Agnes came back to Maine and married her husband James E. Steele in 1946. Together they lived in Durham NH and Bath New York before moving, in 1950, back to Kennebunkport onto Agnes’ grandparent’s farm on Goose Rocks Road, where they lived for 70 happy hard working years giving of their time and energy to all.

Agnes was a life time member of the South Congregational Church, a member of the Goose Rocks Beach Women’s fire auxiliary during the 1950s, a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She also worked with the Mother’s Club and loved to play Bridge.

Agnes is survived by her five children: Anne Steele, Theodore Steele and wife Elizabeth, James E. Steele II, Carol Steele and Helen (Steele) Sherman and husband James plus 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; her brother, Ralph L. Smith, Jr.

Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., followed by funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. A gathering and reception will be held at the funeral home following the service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Kennebunkport Health Department, 101 Main Street, Kennebunkport, ME 04046.
