Obituary for Terrance George Farrell

Terrance George Farrell
Dr. Terrance George Farrell died Saturday, Sept. 22, of a heart attack while riding a bicycle near his home in Kennebunk. A longtime physician in the emergency room of York Hospital, Dr. Farrell became known and admired around the world in recent years for his work as medical director of the World Surf League Big Wave Tour, overseeing first aid and medical care at marquee surfing events from Portugal to Fiji. An avid surfer and athlete himself, he touched many lives in his community and his practice. A loving husband and father, he was beloved by family, friends and patients for his compassion, humor and adventurous spirit

Dr. Farrell was born on March 10, 1957, in Manchester, Conn. He graduated from St. James School and East Catholic High School in Manchester, and in 1979 from the University of Connecticut. He graduated from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine; he interned at Lansing General Hospital in Michigan and did his residency at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He practiced medicine in Portland, Boothbay and other Maine communities before joining the York Hospital staff in 2000. His patients and colleagues remember him for his warm, calm bedside manner and the range of his knowledge and experience; he made a constant effort to keep up on the latest medical findings.

Dr. Farrell loved the state and all things connected to the water: boating, swimming and especially surfing. In his work for the World Surf League, he set new standards for medical care at big-wave events. He was much in demand as a teacher for other medical professionals in a field that is still developing, and was a proud member of Surfing Medicine International.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lisa Inzirillo Farrell; his son, Dylan Farrell, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and daughter, Shannon Farrell, of Santa Monica, Calif.; his sister Katherine Gurtowsky and brother-in-law Edward Gurtowsky of Bristol, Conn.; his sister Maureen Harvey and brother-in-law Robert Harvey of Ellington, Conn.; his sister Mary McCabe and brother-in-law Matthew McCabe of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; his brother, Patrick Farrell of New York City; hIs mother-in-law, Suzanne Inzirillo of Winthrop., Mass., and his brother-in-law Frank Inzirillo of Cotuit, Mass.; and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. He is predeceased by his parents, James and Gertrude Farrell, and his father-in-law, Frank Inzirillo.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the South Congregational Church, 2 North Street, Kennebunkport, ME.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Special Surfers, an organization that helps children with special needs, 146 Holmes Road, Scarborough, Maine 04074.
