Obituary for William A. Junker Jr.

William Albert Junker

1925 – 2018
KENNEBUNKPORT – William A. Junker, 93, of Goose Rocks Beach, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2018 at the Kennebunk Center for Health and Rehabilitation surrounded by family members. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Joan T. Junker; three children: daughter Joanne J. Arrington and her husband Alpheus of Woodbridge, VA; son William A. Junker, III and his wife Maria of Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport; and son Eric Junker and his partner, Denyse Wise of Hills Beach, ME; former daughter in law Lenore McDonald of Oakland, CA; five grandchildren: Lillie, Michael, Matthew, Nicholas, and Emily Junker; one sister, Hildegard Junker of Kennebunk, ME; one brother in law John W. Tilton of Carlsbad, CA; and several nieces and nephews across the country and in Canada. William was predeceased by his parents Wilhelm and Else Junker, and three sisters: Else Foster, Luise Cork, and Annemarie McInnis.

William was born in Boston, MA on January 4, 1925 to Wilhelm and Else Junker. He grew up with four sisters in Dorchester, MA. He graduated high school in 1942 and began college at the Mass College of Pharmacy. During his freshman year, William received his draft notice and he promptly enlisted in the Army and was deployed to France, earning two Bronze Stars. After returning home from WW II, he continued college earning a BS Degree from MCP. William’s work career began as a pharmaceutical sales representative while living in Massachusetts, and then as a pharmacist in Maine until his retirement in 1988.

Prior to the war, William was a competitive figure skater and was Eastern Senior Men’s Champion in 1947. He went on to become a member of the United States Figure Skating Association and was a high test judge for sixty-five years. After moving from Georgetown, MA to Goose Rocks Beach in 1976, William joined the Goose Rocks Beach Fire Company as a volunteer member and later serving as a trustee.

William was never happier than when he was out on the ocean off of GRB in his sailboat, the “Lillie”, or when he was playing with his grandchildren; or sneaking food to the family dog when no one was watching. He will be remembered as a devoted, thoughtful, and honorable husband, father and grampy. His loving, sweet, and kind demeanor was second to none. He shared countless laughs and puns with his wicked sense of humor matched only by his impeccable wardrobe. At the core of his being was William’s love of his family which he often paired with another passion: music. He once wrote a song for his grandchildren dubbing himself “Mr. Perfect.” Though his grandchildren protested at the time, instead calling him “Mr. Poofect,” they now concede he was right all along.

William touched the hearts of many. A celebration of his life will be held in Kennebunkport later in 2019. Details will be provided by the family when final arrangements have been made.
William’s family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. David Strassler, care givers from Aging Excellence and Comfort Keepers, as well as the staff at The Landing at Saco Bay, Southern Maine Health and the Kennebunk Center for Health and Rehabilitation for their kind and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate in his memory may send a contribution to:
