Obituary for Spencer M. Andrews

Spencer M. Andrews
KENNEBUNK Spencer Marston Andrews, 84, a longtime resident of Kennebunk and well- known local builder, passed away with his loving wife at his side Sunday, December 16, 2018. He was also surrounded by his loving family in his final days.

Spencer, was born July 21, 1934 in North Scituate, RI, the eldest son of Everett James and Carrie Adeline Spencer Andrews. Moving first to Liberty, ME, and ultimately settling in Kennebunk as a young child, he is graduate of Kennebunk High School, class of 1952.

Soon after graduating, he began working at Greene’s Garage in Kennebunk, where he met the love of his life Ruth Thyng. They were married in 1955, and in the next few years, they put down roots in the only town he would ever call home.

A well- known and successful building contractor, for the next five decades, Spencer planned and built many homes in the Kennebunk’s and surrounding area. He became a salesman for New England Homes, before forming his first business, Building Fabricators. In the late 1960’s, Spencer started Andrews Enterprises, a family business focused on building pre-fabricated and custom-built quality homes at his facility on York Street. From There, he followed his true passion and began his final business venture, Church Buildings by Andrews, focusing on building churches throughout New England, Illinois and Virginia. Spencer had the honor of building the church he was a part of, the Kennebunk Advent Christian Church on Sea Road, when they moved from Lower Village in 1978. A man of deep faith and conviction to follow his Lords teachings, he brought these traits to all his interactions with his fellow man, especially in each of his business dealings, and thus created many friendships throughout the country.

Spencer was an active member of the Sea Road Church, where he served as Deacon, on the board of Trustees and for many years as well as leading it’s Youth Group for a time. The Andrew’s home was always open their church family to gather and celebrate events large or small, be it a church picnic, New Years celebrations, weddings showers, or just to stop in.

He was a former member of the Kennebunk Rotary Club and is a Paul Harris Fellow, a Delegate for the Advent Christian General Conference (ACC), a Board Member of Vernon Homes and served on the Board of Regents at Berkshire Christian College.

In retirement, Spencer enjoyed the simple things in life. Drives around the beach, going out for breakfast, and watching the Red Sox were among his favorite things, along with being surrounded by his loving and close family.

Spencer is predeceased by his first Son in Law, Gary Perrigo, who died 1998.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ruth Thyng Andrews of Kennebunk, his son Michael Andrews and his wife Sue of Zephyrhills, FL, daughter Susan Andrews Gagnon, and her husband Marc, of Old Orchard Beach and Zephyrhills, FL, grandchildren Josh Perrigo and his wife Sara, Carrie Carter and her husband Jared, and Jill Andrews, two great grandchildren, Jack and Emma Perrigo, two brothers, Paul Andrews and his wife Helen of FL, and Ralph Andrews and his wife Jean of TN and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Spencer’s life will be held 10 AM Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Sea Road Church, 140 Sea RD, Kennebunk, with Reverend Paul Gant officiating. Interment will be held later in Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk.
