Obituary for Herbert Paul Vogt

Herbert Paul Vogt, 80, of Alfred, Maine, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 surrounded by loved ones at Durgin Pines in Kittery, Maine where he had been a resident for a short time. Herb was born on May 27th, 1933 in Bemis, South Dakota to William Vogt & Hattie Dummann; one of 5 children. He was predeceased by his daughter Karen, son David, and older siblings Darleen and Don. As a young man, Herb loved football and played up to the college level. He coached football under Tom Lane at St. Bernard's High School in Fitchburg, MA and was instrumental in starting a track team there. He was known by all as a diehard Georgia Bulldogs college football fan. He served in the Army for 3 years where he met the love of his life, Janet Beaumont of Fitchburg, MA when she visited the hospital at Fort Devens where he was a patient. They married and had 3 daughters and 3 sons. Herb owned an industrial saw sharpening business, Vogt & Son Saw Service, in Georgia which he operated with the help of his son David. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet of Alfred, ME; Son Michael Vogt, wife Montie and daughter Kaitlyn of Cedar Grove, NC; Daughter Suzanne Bridges and husband Brent of Kennebunk, ME; Son Daniel Vogt, wife Wendy, daughter Jessica and son Jonah of Manlius, NY; Daughter Rebecca Husted, husband Corey, son Caleb and daughter Erica of Dublin, OH. He is also survived by grandchildren: Nick Bridges and family of Kennebunk, ME; Courtney Bridges McHenry and family of Holbrook, MA; Nate Bridges of Jackson, WY; Sarah Vogt of Atlanta, GA; 4 great grandchildren; many family friends from his years at St. Bernard's; and his beloved dog "Muffy".

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Bibber Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, Maine.
