Sara “Sally” Hastings Foehl, age 79, of Cape Porpoise, Maine died peacefully on September 30, 2016 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. She was truly grateful for every day of her life, showed empathy for all who she came in contact with, and especially appreciated her loving relationship with her husband, Allen, of 53 years. She was a devoted Catholic, and her deep faith provided love, peace and happiness as she navigated through her life as an educator, wife, mother, grandmother, and golfer.
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia on November 16, 1936, her childhood was one of an idyllic country tomboy, where she, along with her two brothers, Bing and Fuz, explored the Shawnee Hills. An entrepreneur at age 13, Sally started a fresh egg business. The building of the chicken coops ignited her passion for woodworking which evolved into a lifelong pursuit of creating and painting treasured pieces of furniture.
Sally attended the Westover School in Middlebury, CT, followed by Bennett Junior College and graduated from Northwestern University in 1960. She moved to Boston to teach the 1st grade in Norwood, MA, in a school system where her grandson, Henry, began kindergarten this fall, 46 years later.
A devoted wife and mother, Sally married Allen in 1963 “the best decision of my life” and after the birth of their first child moved to Westwood, MA. They lived there for 42 fulfilling years, raising their three boys, Charles, Peter and David. When the children were all in school, Sally began teaching again and worked in the law firm of Foss and Clarke, where her husband was of counsel, in Boston. In 2007, Sally and Allen retired to their summer home in Cape Porpoise, ME.
Golf was her life’s passion. She was an accomplished teacher, competitor and supporter of the great game. Sally began playing in Wheeling with her father at an early age and the game was always an important part of her relationship with her husband, family, and friends. She loved teaching and playing the game with her children and grandchildren. Sally became actively involved with numerous golf organizations throughout her life. She was President of the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts (1999-2000), a member of the U.S. Senior Women’s Golf Association, a member of the Dedham Country and Polo Club for 50 years, serving as Chair of the Greens & Grounds Committee, and a member of the Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport, Maine.
Sally enjoyed the symphony and attended many concerts both in Boston, MA and Portland, ME. Traveling was another lifelong joy of hers where she loved to experience the arts, the outdoors, and the culture of the countries she visited. She particularly enjoyed her golf trips to Great Britain, Ireland, Spain and Portugal.
Sally is survived by her husband, Allen of 53 years; her son Charles, his wife Sara Mayo, and their children Walker and Reed of Portland, ME; her son Peter and his children Mason and Liam of Park City, UT; her son David, his wife, Carol, and their children, Henry and Eleanor of Norwood, MA. She is also survived by her caring brother, Charles A. Hastings and his wife Florence of Boone, NC and Vero Beach, FL. Sally was grateful to be surrounded in her lifetime by many admiring Hastings and Foehl family members. She leaves behind a wide and devoted circle of friends.
Sally is predeceased by her parents Harold Krieg Hastings and Lucille Aul Hastings; her brother Harold “Bing” Hastings and his wife Sallie; her sister-in-law Angelica “Cranny” Hastings; her brother-in-law William C. Foehl and her daughter-in-law and Peter's late wife, Emily Roosevelt.
The family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at New England Cancer Specialists, Hospice of Southern Maine, and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their special care.

A funeral mass will be held at Saint Martha’s Church in Kennebunk, ME on Thursday October 6, 2016 at 11 AM with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. A private burial will be held later.
