Obituary for Richard James "Dick" Beamish

Richard James "Dick" Beamish
Dateline – Dover, NH

Richard (Dick) James Beamish, 93, formerly of Berwick, Maine and a resident of Bellamy Fields, Dover, NH, died April 22, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley Arlene (Emery) Beamish in 2014 and his son, David James, his oldest child in 2010.

Richard was born July 23, 1923 at home in Somersworth, NH, the only child of Richard Joseph and Anne (Farley) Beamish. He graduated from Somersworth High School in 1940 and married the love of his life, Shirley in 1946.

Richard proudly served his country in WWII, serving in the Navy and completing 5 patrols aboard the submarine USS Thresher (SS 200), working as a diesel mechanic. He was employed at the CE Ricker plumbing shop in Berwick before and after his Naval service. He worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and at General Electric in Somersworth, NH for short periods of time. Richard retired as head of the plumbing shop at Pease Air Force Base in 1972, and then went to work for the Berwick Sewer District, retiring in 1983. He also served as the Berwick plumbing inspector and coached a Berwick minor league baseball team for several years.

After his retirement, Dick and Shirley enjoyed spending their retirement years together, residing on Cemetery Road in Berwick in the summer months, and living as "snowbirds" in Plant City, FL, where they played golf and spent many hours with their friends attending dances, playing cards, and going out to dinner. Richard was an avid worker, always puttering around his home fixing things and keeping his house and property looking nice. He always offered a helping hand to whoever he could. Dick had many greatly loved pet dogs over the years.

Richard was a parishioner for many years at Our Lady of Peace in Berwick, ME and attended Holy Trinity Church in Somersworth in recent years. He was a member of the American Legion post #79 in Berwick.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Debra and her husband, Dennis Dupuis; his daughter Diane and her husband, Dennis Moore; and his son, Richard and his wife Dianne (Belanger) all of Berwick, Maine. He is survived by his grandchildren, Kellie (Dupuis) Nock of Berwick, ME; Regan Dupuis of Rochester, NH; Katie Mae (Moore) Taylor of Rochester, NH; Stephanie (Beamish) Pooler of Carmel, ME; and Michael Beamish of Dayton, ME, as well as nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Bellamy Fields for the care and compassion they showed Richard in his final years.
