Obituary for Joan Frances Hogan (Steck)

Joan Frances Hogan (Steck)
Kennebunk, ME

Joan Frances (Steck) Hogan, 79, of Kennebunk Beach, Maine died peacefully at her home on Monday, May 22, 2017. She was born on December 28, 1937 in Waterbury, Connecticut, daughter of Charles Theodore and Mary Elizabeth (LaFond) Steck. Joan graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing (Waterbury, CT) where she met her husband of 55 years, J. Michael Hogan M.D.

Joan was one of those people that lead with her whole heart and never let an obstacle stand in her way. She truly believed that raising her children and nurturing her family was the most important job in the world. Her life was not about her, it was about them. She conveyed to anyone that knew her that everyone, no matter their caste in life, deserves equal respect and generosity. Throughout her life, she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many and her innate gift of selflessness, kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

Aside from her family, her greatest joys in life were the welfare of animals, tending to her gardens, cooking large meals for family & friends, a good win at the slots, and nobody, and we mean nobody, could throw a party, both formal or impromptu, like she could.

She is predeceased by her husband J. Michael Hogan M.D. and her brothers Charles, Edward and Marlin Steck.

Survivors include her sons, J. Michael Hogan Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Greenville, SC, Chris Hogan and his wife Lisa of Singapore, Tim Hogan of Lawrenceville, NJ, and Patrick Hogan of Scarborough, ME; her daughters, Mary Bruni and her husband Joe of Kennebunk, ME and Sheila Kron and her husband Rob of Lawrenceville, NJ; fourteen grandchildren, Joey Bruni, Ben Hogan, Sam Hogan, Jack Hogan, Jamie Hogan, Rosie Hogan, Oliver Kron, Aidan Kron, Charlie Hogan, Miles Kron, Grace Hogan, Lily Mei Hogan, Cassius Hogan, Jake Hogan and Ennie Mediana of Ilo Ilo, Philippines; and her beloved cat, Tony.

Joan’s burial and committal service will be held on her beloved husband, Michael’s, birthday, at 11 am on Friday, June 9, 2017 at Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 7, 2017 at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Martha’s Church, 30 Portland Road, Kennebunk, ME.

Should friends choose, donations in her memory are encouraged to either: The Animal Welfare Society of West Kennebunk, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094 (www.animalwelfaresociety.org) or Preble Street Mission, 38 Preble Street, Portland, ME 04101 (www.preblestreet.org). The Hogan family would also like to recognize the kindness and empathy of the nursing staff from Beacon Hospice and the office of Dr. Charles Parent whose compassionate support will be forever appreciated.

“The good mother, the wise mother, is more important to the community than even the ablest man; her career is more worthy of honor and is more useful to the community than the career of any man, no matter how successful”…Theodore Roosevelt
