Obituary for John Nelson Cluff Sr.

John Nelson Cluff Sr.
John N. Cluff Sr. 85, a lifetime resident of Kennebunkport and former road commissioner for the town, died suddenly Tuesday, October 3, 2017 while attending the Fryeburg Fair with his family.

John was born September 14, 1932 in Kennebunkport, the son of Edgar Wilbur and Jessie Perkins Cluff, and attended Kennebunkport Schools.

He began working at the young age of 10, riding around Kennebunkport in a horse drawn wagon cleaning the roadways, he worked as a gardener for Irvin Corneally in town, and when he became of age, began working with the State Highway Department as a plowman and heavy equipment operator, retiring after 30 years from MDOT out of the Kennebunk garage. Not through working, six month later he took a short term job as the Road Commissioner for the town of Kennebunkport, which he retired from 10 years later, only to start working for Richard Lovejoy Builders.

John only recently fully retired, which allowed him time to enjoy hunting, fishing, gardening, attending fairs and going to the horse tracks.

He was a member of and had received his 50 year medal from Arundel Lodge # 76 AF & AM in Kennebunkport, was a longtime board member of the Arundel Cemetery Association, and the Maine State Employees Association.

He is predeceased by his son John N. Cluff Jr in 2000.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Janet Leach Cluff of Kennebunkport, a son Jody Ernest Cluff and his partner Marie Green of Saco, a daughter J. Robin Cluff Lovejoy and her husband Richard of North Berwick, a sister Mary Bickford of Kennebunkport, grandchildren Tari Hodgkins and her husband Stephen of Biddeford and Ryan Cluff of Kennebunkport, great grandchildren Maranda Hodgkins and her Partner Joseph Crowe and Tyler Hodgkins, and a great-great granddaughter, Callie Crowe, all of Biddeford.

Visiting hours will be held 10AM – Noon Friday, October 6, 2017 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, followed by a Masonic Service and funeral service with Reverend Charles Whiston Officiating at 12:00PM. Interment will be in the Arundel Cemetery at a later date.
