He was born in Portland on November 14, 1922, the son of John Thomas Sherman and Eva Mae (Moore) Sherman. He grew up in Portland until the age of 19, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving in the Seabees during World War II in the South Pacific. In 1962, he started his own company, Sherman and Son Flooring Company, which he ran until his retirement in 1986.

Philip was never one to sit idle. In his retirement, he worked as a carpenter. In addition to building his home in Saco, he also made several beautiful furniture pieces for his family, and also handcrafted a strip kayak.

Philip was a member of Saco Lodge #9, A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years.

He is predeceased by a son, Paul Sherman, and his sister, Barbara Sherman.
