Obituary for Carney Carlisle Howell

Carney Carlisle  Howell
Carney Carlisle Howell, 69, passed away at home in Kennebunk ME. on November 3rd, 2018 after a battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He faced his illness with courage and humor.
Carney was born in Speedway, Indiana August 17, 1949. The family moved to Gladwyne, PA where Carney attended Harriton High School of Lower Merion Township in Bryn Mawr, PA. Many close friendships and fond memories were made during this time. Carney graduated from the University of Indiana, where he found his love for college basketball and the Hoosiers. Carney did Basic Combat Training in the 1st Army at Fort Dix, NJ. He was in the US Army 8th Infantry Division in Bad Kreuznach, Republic of West Germany. Initially serving in the 8th Administration Company in Information Technology, Carney was honorably discharged in 1973. Carney retired from Liberty Mutual Insurance after 25 years working as an IT Specialist in the Portsmouth, NH office. After retirement, Carney worked with the Portland Sea Dogs organization in Portland, ME.
Carney took great joy in spending time with his family and especially his two grandchildren, Cameron and Maya Clifford. They could always put a smile on Grampy’s face and sunshine in his heart!
Carney always enjoyed sharing stories and laughs with all the many lifelong friends he made along the way from his Army buddies and Final Four gatherings to family celebrations. Carney had many very close friends to include Don, George, Jack and Lauren that were very supportive during the last season of his life.
Carney was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Ruth Howell, his sister Susan K. Howell, and his late wife, Susan Hanscom Howell. He is survived by his wife Judy Shanks Howell, his three children Stacia Howell and her boyfriend, Ellery Raitt, Charlie Howell, Abby and Jeff Clifford, two grandchildren, Cameron and Maya Clifford, brother-in-law Peter Hanscom and Katherine Hanscom and his extended Vermont family.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the American Legion, PO Box 801, Sanford, ME 04076.
